A Taste of Southern Barbecue

Pig Floyd’s Urban Barbakoa is the cool kids’ answer to straightforward Southern barbecue in Central Florida. This compact restaurant along Mills Avenue in the Mills 50 district certainly packs a punch well above its size. The owner, Thomas Ward, has made great use of the limited space available to provide an amazing counter service BBQ restaurant with an industrial feel, white washed brick walls, stone floor and open theater kitchen, it is right on trend, with a patio area for cooler days and nights, it’s the perfect place to hang out and enjoy great food.

The food roster highlights the usual items: brisket, ribs, slaw, pork belly and the like. But it’s the Caribbean, Latin and Asian twists that set Pig Floyd’s apart from eateries such as Southern Moon, another Orlando food-truck spinoff, and 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

The term “One man’s meat is another man’s poison “could not be truer than when describing BBQ, as everyone has their own interpretation on what makes BBQ great, but make no mistake Pig Floyd’s is right up there with the best, as witnessed by the line out the door and the happy sighs of customers tucking into Thomas Ward’s food.

This Latin, Asian, and Southern American BBQ fusion joint in Orlando’s Mills 50 district has a nice list of bites, including Matambre smoked brisket sandwiches topped with egg, Indian Butter chicken tacos and the Latin plantain and fried yuca sides. But it’s all about the Oakwood Smoked St. Louis Barbecue Ribs here. Succulent. Juicy. Sweet, yet refined. Delicious. When you can get it, it’s really good. The problem is that it is can sell out fast, so call ahead and make sure they’ve got some ready for you.

Pig Floyd Urban Barbakoa is at 1326 N. Mills Ave., Orlando. It is open for lunch and dinner daily, including late night (midnight) on Fridays and Saturdays.

Hard Rock Café in Florida

In a city with so much to see and do, the main attraction for locals, as well as tourists, is Hard Rock Cafe Orlando. Located at Universal Studios Orlando in the City Walk entertainment complex, Hard Rock Cafe Orlando is the biggest HRC in the world. With large, statuesque pillars, it stands majestically as a Roman Coliseum of rock, and boasts more pieces of music memorabilia than any other location. The site includes not only a vast, multi-level cafe, but also Hard Rock Live Orlando, a 3,000-person concert/party venue.

The Hard Rock Café combines food with music memorabilia. Each location features thousands of curated pieces from rock music’s greatest artists. The Orlando location is the largest in the world and contains the iconic suit that Elvis wore in the Viva Las Vegas movie, fragments of Pete Townshend’s custom guitar, Buddy Holly’s glasses, a huge collection of Beatles memorabilia, and other unique pieces.

The Hard Rock Café Orlando has an extensive menu. You can find many of the same offerings that are served at other Hard Rock Cafés, including the Legendary Burger. The Orlando version has Twisted Mac and Cheese on it.

In addition to burgers, you can also find a wide range of appetizers, salads, fajitas, steaks, smokehouse barbecue, salmon, sandwiches, and desserts like shakes, cakes, cobbler, and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. The Hard Rock Café also has a large drink menu. If you’re looking for something unique, try one of the twisted milkshakes or the table-pressed alcoholic lemonades.

The Hard Rock is open from 11:00 am to 12:00 am. Lunch and early afternoon is a great time to visit because the restaurant is not nearly as busy as it is at dinner time or after the park closes. However, the restaurant has plenty of seating on multiple levels, so getting a table isn’t usually that difficult most of the time (but there are exceptions). If you don’t like to wait for a table, you should definitely make reservations ahead of time so that you can get priority seating.
